A self-drive safari succeeds or fails long before you turn the key in Kigali. Safari adventure preparation Rwanda-style means booking permits early, picking the right 4×4, and knowing what each park road will demand. This guide works as a countdown, so you can tick things off from three months out to the morning you drive away.
Three Months Out: Lock In the Things That Sell Out
Some parts of a Rwanda trip have limited supply. Therefore, start with them and build everything else around the dates you secure.
Gorilla and chimp permits
Gorilla permits for Volcanoes National Park cost US$1,500 per person and are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Daily numbers are capped, so the busy months of June to September and December fill early. Chimp tracking in Nyungwe also has limited places. Book these first, then fix your route.
Your 4×4 and any camping kit
Next, reserve the vehicle. Land Cruisers with rooftop tents are popular and limited in number. If you want to camp, ask for our car rental with camping gear package at the same time.
Lodges in the parks
Akagera and Nyungwe have only a handful of places to stay inside or near the park. In contrast, Musanze has plenty of choice. Book the scarce ones now.
Choosing the Vehicle for Your Route
Your itinerary decides the vehicle, not the other way round. Most Rwanda main roads are paved and in good shape. However, park tracks, trailhead roads and lodge driveways can be steep, rocky or muddy.
| Trip style | Good fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, mostly tarmac, one park | Toyota RAV4 | Economical and easy to drive |
| Family or photographers, several parks | Land Cruiser Safari | Pop-up roof, space and clearance |
| Campers wanting independence | Land Cruiser or Hilux with rooftop tent | Sleeping, cooking and storage in one |
| Comfort on long transfer days | Land Cruiser Prado | Smooth ride with real off-road ability |
If you are unsure, tell us your route and dates. We will suggest the smallest vehicle that still handles every road you plan to use.

One Month Out: Safari Adventure Preparation for Rwanda Paperwork
With the big bookings done, turn to documents. Missing paperwork is the most common reason a self-drive start gets delayed.
- Driving licence. Bring your full national licence. An International Driving Permit alongside it avoids questions at checkpoints.
- Passport and visa. Check the entry rules for your nationality. Many visitors can get a visa on arrival or apply online.
- Health papers. Find out whether you need a yellow fever certificate. Also speak to a travel clinic about malaria tablets.
- Travel insurance. Make sure it covers medical evacuation and hiking at altitude for gorilla treks.
- Cross-border plans. If you will enter Uganda or Tanzania, tell us now. We need time to prepare the vehicle documents for a cross-border car hire.
Mapping the Drive Days
Rwanda is compact, but hilly roads make distances feel longer. Plan realistic driving days so you never rush on mountain bends at dusk.
- Kigali to Musanze and Volcanoes: about 2 to 2.5 hours.
- Kigali to the Akagera gate: about 2.5 hours.
- Kigali to Rubavu on Lake Kivu: about 3 to 3.5 hours.
- Kigali to Nyungwe: about 5 to 6 hours.
As a rule, avoid driving after dark. Night brings pedestrians, bicycles and unlit vehicles on rural roads. Also, gorilla treks start early at Kinigi, so sleep near the park the night before. For route ideas, our road trips in Rwanda page has tested loops.
One Week Out: Packing for a Rwanda Self-Drive
Pack for both the car and the trails. Rwanda’s highlands are cool, and the rain can arrive fast.
For the vehicle
- Phone mount and car charger, plus offline maps downloaded.
- Reusable water bottles and a small cool box.
- Snacks for long stretches between towns.
- A small torch and a dry bag for electronics.
For you
- Waterproof jacket and warm layer for Volcanoes and Nyungwe.
- Broken-in hiking boots and gardening gloves for nettles.
- Neutral-coloured clothes for game drives in Akagera.
- Insect repellent, sunscreen and a hat.
Remember that plastic bags are banned in Rwanda. Use fabric or paper bags instead.
Handover Day: Final Checks Before You Drive
On collection day, set aside about 30 minutes. You will walk around the car with our team, test the spare wheel and jack, and confirm the fuel level. Ask how to engage four-wheel drive and, if fitted, how to open the rooftop tent.
Then save our WhatsApp number in your phone. Buy a local SIM card for data and calls. Finally, carry some Rwandan francs in cash, because park entrances, rural fuel stations and markets may not take cards. Our self-drive Rwanda team will answer any last questions before you leave.
Common Preparation Mistakes to Avoid
- Too many parks in too few days. Two parks in a week is relaxed. Four is a driving marathon.
- Ignoring the season. The long rains, roughly March to May, make some tracks slippery. Plan extra time.
- Running fuel low. Fill up in Kigali, Musanze, Huye or Rubavu before heading into a park.
- Arriving late at a trailhead. Gorilla briefings start early and will not wait.
Safari Preparation FAQs
How far ahead should I book a self-drive safari in Rwanda?
For the dry seasons, three to six months is wise because permits and rooftop-tent vehicles go first. In quieter months, a few weeks can be enough.
Do I need four-wheel drive if I only visit Volcanoes and Lake Kivu?
The main roads are paved, so a two-wheel drive could reach the towns. However, trailhead tracks at Volcanoes are rough, so a 4×4 is the safer choice.
Can I collect the car at the airport after a night flight?
Yes. Still, consider a hotel night in Kigali first and start driving rested the next morning.
What should I do if a road is closed or flooded?
Call or WhatsApp us. We know local detours and can advise you before you commit to a bad stretch.
